American computer scientist Steven Rayne took the nom de guerre, Merlin, at least in part, as a way of self-healing—distancing himself from the loss of his wife and unborn child (indeed, his soul and sanity) to the horrors of Armageddon. Marooned in Britain, in the bloody aftermath, he finds a source of technologies that make the name his destiny.
In December 2041, Merlin discovers the fortress of a friend and ally destroyed by weapons of unprecedented power. Searching for the attackers, he stumbles into an ambush—which he survives thanks only to the help of a young stranger. Grateful as he is, Merlin interprets his rescuer’s timely appearance—and total amnesia—as an opportunity to remake the world in the image of Camelot.
Ignoring his moral compass to pursue his obsession, he hatches a scheme to transform the teenager into the legendary King Arthur. Of course, the idea is lunatic in its ambition, but backed by incredibly advanced technologies—including Merlin’s uncanny psi-crystal flute—it just may work.
At Hidden Lake Labs, a quantum supercomputer named Qassandra fashions a modern “Excalibur” from the same exotic crystal substance that powers Merlin’s flute; but convincing the Directors that the lad is King Arthur seems unlikely at best.
For one thing, Merlin is a Yank (and arguably still insane).
For another, Lord Gore is an 8-foot-tall giant in cybernetic armor, with his own plans for the throne.
But Merlin’s most formidable adversary may be Jennifer Niles Morgan. Her name stirs ironic echoes—and she’s rumored to be a witch.
With an assist from Chester, Sanctuary’s personality-riddled AI, Merlin uses virtual reality to “program” his Arthur. The lad’s a quick study and displays far more hidden talent than anyone dared imagine, but as the Winter Solstice approaches, the real test will come at Stonehenge.

For those of you that have read T.H. Whites “The Once and Future King”, or even seen videos based on it; you know the legend is compelling and leaves an untold chapter for the future. Especially intriguing is the part about “… the king to be”. Indeed Campbell’s “A Hero with a Thousand Faces” implies that such archetypes arise out of the needs of the time, and the hero meme patterned in the culture will shape the hero. In ancient history, that mechanism was attributed to the Gods, Fate, Destiny, or Deep Magic, but in more modern times we have another way. To paraphrase Voltaire "If the leader we need does not exist, it will be necessary to invent him”. By why start from scratch?Mendrygal propels the reader into the future when a post apocalyptic England, that despite advanced technology, barely survives, and is rapid degenerating into a Might Makes Right Dark Age. So consistent with human history, the aggressive and brutal are rising to the top of the food chain. Although many realize the need for unification under a heroic and ethical leader, there just isn’t one to be had. What does it take to make the ancient legend come true and bring about the return of the Wise and Nobel King before all is lost? Only the mad would encourage the hopeless to fight against overwhelming evil forces. Who would believe that there was hope that the tide could be turned? Only the insane would try to convince survivors that Arthur had indeed returned. Mendrygal weaves an amazing story of how a shattered man redeems himself and becomes a self-made Merlin so he can embark on a quest to find an Arthur.
This fusion of the ancient, the modern, and the future is a must read for those of adventurous spirits, and hearts courageous enough to appreciate the agents of change.

A Darkness Past Midnight The Merlin Protocol Book 1 eBook M E Mendrygal Reviews
For me, good character development is primary to a good book. This has it in spades. What the characters do are well within the scope of what is feasible, not unreasonable has happens in many books of this ilk. Why only 4 stars.. the author's use of wording and grammar sometimes is baffling. But all in all a great read.
Have you ever finished a book and immediately looked for the second in the series? Well, this is what happened when I finished the new edition of ADPM. When I first read "The Merlin Protocol A Darkness past Midnight" almost three years ago, I liked the story immediately, but something seemed to be missing. As compelling as the narrative was, there were parts that didn’t catch my interest. The second edition fixes those elements, and then some. Finally, the writing matches the story. The author has elaborated the plot, created new interest in the characters and given the story even more striking clarity.
M E Mendrygal is obviously steeped in the genre of speculative fiction and the legends of King Arthur. He brings both of these subjects to a well-told tale that demands a read (and then a re-read) while we await the next book. I find myself asking what is going to happen next? How does a madman, who accepts the mantle of a magician, force his vision upon a war-torn world. How will it work? How will Arthur become king again? How will the good guys overcome the bad guys? All of these questions and more await answers, and to that end, I eagerly await Book 2 of The Merlin Protocol.
I am so happy for the second edition of what I expect will become my favorite series in this genre.
I've got to admit that I was a bit skeptical of a "King Arthur in the future story", but the author really pulled it off. In addition to Merlin and Arthur, you have castles, noblemen of both the good and evil varieties, the sword in the stone, Stonehenge and other bits and pieces that lend to the legend of King Arthur. Add to that the elements of the future like the virtual reality Dreamboats and the swarms of drones with cameras and you have a blend of the past and the future that sucks you into the story. That story is the journey of Merlin and Arthur to save the world.
This Merlin Protocol has everything I look for in a good book. A great story well written, humor, and vocabulary words I don't know. If you like King Arthur and you like science fiction, you will like this book.
One last thought, with modern CGI, I think this book would make a really good movie!
Virtuoso story-telling set in one of the most unique worlds I've ever encountered. Mendrygal masterfully weaves Arthurian myth with post-apocalyptic tropes, fashioning a setting and cast of characters that pull you right into the gripping narrative.
I was particular impressed with the actual beauty of the writing. It is well-crafted, vivid, with page after page of memorable metaphors and turns of phrase--something you don't usually expect from this genre of novel, but a welcome surprise.
The technology described is highly original, believable, and unique; it greatly adds to the atmosphere of this dark tale.
I highly recommend "A Darkness Past Midnight" to aficionados of science fiction, fantasy, and post-apocalyptic fiction.
